Power BI August 2026 update: GA date picker, Theme pane, and refresh you can actually control

Microsoft ships Power BI every month. August 2026 is one of the rare waves where several preview chores become default behavior. You do not need a Fabric program to use them. You do need a short list of what to turn on this week versus what stays in a pilot workspace.

This article filters the August 2026 what’s new and the August 2026 feature summary down to actions BI admins and report authors can take now. Watch the August demos if you want the click-path.

1. Date picker slicer (generally available)

The date picker slicer left preview in August. Relative windows still roll forward. You also get a calendar, a slider, a Single date mode under Visual → Slicer settings → Selection controls, and a header icon to clear the selection.

Small win this week: Convert the monthly ops report that still ships with a stale “last month” range. Anchor relative options to the last date in the column, not today, if finance books close T+2.

If you already built a bookmark circus around date ranges, leave it. Use date picker on the next report, not as a rewrite of a working pattern.

2. Theme pane and Fluent 2 defaults (generally available)

New reports in Desktop and the service start on the Fluent 2 base theme. The Theme pane is GA: base theme, palettes, text styles, page and filter-pane chrome, import/export — Desktop or web. Font overrides were stripped from the base theme so a change in Text actually hits titles, labels, and callouts on every visual, including ones you add later.

Team rule: Export one approved .json theme from a brand report. Import it as the first step on every new PBIX. Stop hand-tinting 40 visuals.

Existing reports keep their current theme until you opt in. Do not bulk-convert the exec pack the night before a board meeting.

3. Semantic model refresh: schema vs data

The service Refresh button is no longer a single blunt instrument. You get:

• Refresh schema and data — old default
• Sync schema only — pick up new columns / type changes without reloading facts
• Refresh data only — load data, keep the current model shape

You can also refresh one table. That matters for Direct Lake: a lakehouse table can grow a column you are not ready to expose.

Small win: On the next Direct Lake incident, refresh data only. Sync schema in Dev, then promote.

4. Fabric Apps: consumers drop from Build to Read

By the end of August (rolling into early September), people who consume a Fabric App built from the data-app template need Read on the semantic model, not Build. Authors still need Build.

This is the least-privilege change that should have shipped with the preview. Audit app audiences now: anyone who only views the app should lose Build before the permission model flips, or they keep a privilege they never needed.

5. Copilot Summary can see bookmark-hidden visuals

Authors who use bookmarks as tabs hide visuals by default and reveal them with a display-only bookmark. Copilot Summary and the Copilot Narrative visual previously skipped those visuals, so the “summary” described half the page.

August lets Copilot read those bookmark-revealable visuals in place. RLS and OLS still apply. It does not flip the bookmark for the viewer.

Guardrail: If a visual is hidden because it is a draft or a debug card, Copilot can now talk about it. Hide drafts with a Dev-only bookmark you do not ship, or delete them before Prod.

6. OneLake file URLs in visuals (generally available)

Image files in OneLake can feed the image visual, table/matrix cells, cards, button and list slicers, and custom icons. Power BI authenticates as the viewer. Shape-map and Azure Maps reference layers can point at OneLake too.

Stop parking logos on anonymous blob containers “because Power BI needs a public URL.” Put brand assets in a governed lakehouse Files folder and paste the OneLake URL.

7. Org app comments

Viewers can comment on pages and visuals inside org apps, with @mentions and captured filter context. Useful for UAT. Noise if Finance treats comments as a second Teams channel.

Policy: Enable on Dev/Test org apps. Keep Prod comments off until you have an owner who will close threads.

8. PBIP: instant reload and Open in VS Code

Desktop detects external edits to Power BI Project files and prompts Apply. There is a built-in entry point to open the project in VS Code. This is the Git loop TMDL/PBIR teams have been waiting for: edit, apply, do not restart Desktop.

If you are still PBIX-only, this is the reason to switch the next new report to PBIP — not a migration of the 2019 archive.

9. Direct Lake previews (pilot workspace only)

Two modeling previews are worth a non-prod test, not a Friday promote:

• Convert Direct Lake tables to Import in web modeling, to build a mixed-mode model without Desktop gymnastics
• Direct Lake calculated columns (query-time DAX, user context, no materialization, cannot be used in relationships)

Treat both as R&D until your golden-model standards say otherwise.

10. Mobile: rotate view and export to Excel

Rotate view in the mobile report footer switches layout even when the phone is locked portrait — a gift for reports with no mobile layout. Export data to Excel from focus mode or the visual … menu respects filters, drill, and RLS.

If you banned Excel export in the tenant for a reason, this mobile path will surprise you. Check the tenant setting before execs discover it on a train.

11. Desktop file picker deprecation (action by October)

Desktop versions from March 2026 or earlier lose OneDrive/SharePoint save-and-share when the old file picker goes away in October. This is not a feature. It is a fleet-update deadline.

Admin win: Push August Desktop (or later) through Intune this month. Do not wait for October tickets.

What to adopt vs defer

Cosmetic GA (donut center value, matrix column expand, outer padding, slicer dropdown chrome) is real. Apply it when you restyle a report, not as a standalone project.

One-afternoon checklist

1. Install August 2026 Desktop on the BI team machines
2. Convert one date slicer to date picker with a relative default
3. Export/import one Theme pane JSON as the team default
4. Document Refresh data only vs Sync schema only in the refresh runbook
5. Audit Fabric App consumers for leftover Build permission
6. Confirm Excel export tenant policy vs the new mobile path
7. Skim the feature summary for one visual GA that matches a report you already planned to restyle

These are not a Direct Lake migration. They cut friction while Microsoft ships mixed-mode modeling and agentic Copilot, and they give users a cleaner date control this month.
